What People Are Saying

I attended a Smart Discipline seminar at Baptist Hospital East. The air conditioning was not working in the auditorium, and it was miserably hot. But, the Smart Discipline presentation was worth the heat! It was the best money I ever spent.

I was failing in parental skills, and Smart Discipline rescued me. I am no longer a “wimp” mother. The word “no” used to mean “maybe”. Not any more. And my kids know it. My husband and I are in charge now, not the kids.

Thanks for the simple tools. Too bad babies aren’t born with your workbook in their hands!

– K. Spillman, Louisville, KY

“I attended the smart discipline seminar in Tulsa, OK last weekend. I was so motivated to try it that I came home and started immediately. I’m amazed, our home is suddenly so much more peaceful. With my kids ages 4, 9 and 11 this program is really working. They are doing chores, not bickering and I only have to ask them once to do something. My husband is ecstatic as well. He works from a home office and me yelling at the kids to behave is a major distraction. Wow we might survive summer break now thanks to Smart Discipline.”

– Tracie M.

“I went to your seminar @ Pennington recently front row seat divorced parent we spoke during the break. You have changed my family and it took 1 day! My son has been going to counseling for over a year to deal with the divorce(ex had an affair for many years) Holden was so mad at me(son) I was having chest pains dealing with him and your class was my last hope I didn’t know what else to do with my out of control son. Wish I could hug you and say THANKS for everything. You have saved my family; my two boys and I are truly a different family after going to your seminar and reading your book. May God bless you and your family.”

– Fondly, Dana Simoneaux

“My husband & I attended your seminar in the fall of 2003. I’m amazed how easy the Smart Discipline system is to set up and how well both of my children (ages 6 & 13) have responded to it! It is just what we all needed.”

– Thanks, Jennifer Nichols

“I am soooo excited about this program and have just read the book cover to cover. I am especially glad to have the tools to help my 10 year old son with self-esteem. I was doing all the wrong things with good intentions instead of pointing out the positive. It is already making a difference and we have just started 3 days ago. Thank You!!!!!”

– Janie E Martin

“I would like to thank you for coming to Pa and speaking at the Union Lutheran church in Schnecksville Pa. My husband and I attended because we were at our wits end with our 2 children who are 5 and 3. I am tired of all the yelling and wanted a new way of disciplining our children. I grew up in a yelling and screaming family and it didn’t work for me, and I knew it wouldn’t work for our children. I really am excited about this system and can’t wait to get it started. The way that you spoke in ways that we could understand and sympathize with and the humor that you used was great. I felt like we weren’t alone with our discipline woes. Keep up the good work and here we go.”

– Kathy Tola

I have been using the Smart Discipline Program for one week. It is awesome. My five year old has been an angel

Thank you and I think that you may have saved my and my husband’s sanity!

– M. Day, Denham Springs, LA

This program shows a more affective way of disciplining children in a positive manner. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to attend this seminar. Any way that I can better myself in positive way towards my children will give them and understanding of respect and responsible behavior that they can take with them into the world.

– N. Hartman, Fort Wayne, IN

I started using your Smart Discipline program in my home last September. As a primary provider of three children under the age of 12, I needed a strategy to keep the peace and foster cooperation between all parties. Smart Discipline has been a Godsend. Since its inception, the program has produced remarkable results in my family. Not only has the yelling stopped, but the level of responsibility has dramatically increased….and this small footnote, my two oldest children, twins, both made the honor roll for the first time ever last marking period. Suffice it to say, I am a fan of Smart Discipline!

– M. Wright, Yorkshire, NY

My family has just begun using the Smart Discipline program. I have a six year old and a 3 ½ year old. So far so good, but it has only been a few days. Sure has taken a lot of stress out of our home already, though. Thank you for your suggestions, you may have saved my son’s life (hehe). I just want to tell you what a wonderful idea you have here.

– H. Rogers, Eldora, IA

I have been using your Parenting method for about four years and have come to rely on this method even when I have not had to use it for a period of time. I have four children and by just saying the and individual has an X, my children seem to treat the X as a piece of gold that has been taken away. Thank you so much for the un-need to yell or have my own form of temper tantrum.

– Jeraldine R Olis, Inverness, Il

Dear Larry,

Thank you for a wonderful book. I have literally just finished it and know that
it will be an important tool that I will continually refer back to while raising my now five year old boy. Not only did it show me the things I am doing right thus far, it has given me priceless guidance on things I need to get into place.

I am fortunate that my son is not poorly behaved and mostly when issues do arise

it is just something new he is trying and I will nip it in the bud. I have already told every other Mom on his soccer team to pick up a copy- and in my humble opinion as a Mom- I hope they do for their children’s sake. Thanks again and I am looking forward to attending a seminar on Smart Discipline. I hope you will be in the Miami Florida area soon. I would even be willing to help set this up at my son’s preschool!

– Kindest -Jodie Perez, Miami Florida

Your book is really helping our home! I have seen great effort by my step son!
I love how the structure helps my husband and me since the rules and consequences are all laid out; we can be consistent and reasonable!

I am really enjoying praising the kids, too. The structure of making a list of rules helps with this as it makes it easier for me to identify their good and their effort!

– Beth Brown

Of course you may use Christopher’s quote. He was 9, just a few days shy

of 10, when he said it, just last weekend. The timing was perfect —
just six days before Larry’s presentation. 🙂

Here’s the story again: He had a friend over. I asked him to do
something and when he didn’t do it right away, I gently reminded him he
didn’t want to get an X. His friend asked him what an X was, and he
showed his friend his Smart Discipline chart on the refrigerator. He
said, “If I don’t follow the rules, I get an X on my chart, and if I get
too many Xs, I lose a privilege.”

I printed out the survey I spoke of, so I will fax that to you, but it
does not show the exact source. It was from a parenting publication like
Parents magazine and it was cited online. I will also send you the
particular statistics I pulled from it and mentioned Thursday night.

– Becky Steimle, Special Events Director, Metroparent Magazine

“Just read your book and am completing my first week of successful discipline. Thank you for such a simple system !”

– Sallie Starbuck, PTA president

“I just read your book this weekend for a Parenting class i am taking and I thought it was GREAT! I am always looking for new resources to share with my preschoolers parents. I loved the postive aspects of parenting that you go by in your book and the way you offer something else then a time out. Thanks!”

– Jennifer Lane

Just a quick note to thank you for your outstanding program for the Mount Vernon City School District on Professional Development Day. The teachers were very pleased and felt the afternoon was well spent. Your warmth and motivational skills for teachers and parents certainly kept everyone engaged.

– Kathleen Gilmore, Asst. Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Mount Vernon City School District, Mount Vernon, New York

On behalf of the parents at The Dunham School, I would like to thank you for giving of your time, energy and experience this past Tuesday evening. Parents have been commenting to me how much they benefited from the evening and that they are working to apply the principles you shared.

I think all parents can benefit from the wise counsel of experts in “tweeking” their own skills. Your seminar and materials provide practical and simple tools for parents to implement in a positive and powerful way; you grant them permission to assume their role as the parents in the home once again. Thank you for offering our parents the opportunity to learn how to enhance their relationships with their children.

– Joyce Wakefield, Director of Counseling, The Dunham School, Baton Rouge, LA

Just a note to say how much I appreciate your appearing before the LSU Legal Negotiation class yesterday. Your presentation was one of the finest and most interesting presentations ever given to the class; and of real benefit to the students.

– Wm. H. McClendon, III, Law Professor, LSU

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your support and use of your terrific materials! My workshop for the YMCA Child Care Division on Redirecting Behavior was a real success last Saturday. I was overwhelmed with positive comments!

– Mary Grace Surrena, School Psychologist, Henando County, FL

‘Smart Discipline for the Classroom’ is required reading for my new teachers. You can’t buy a better book on discipline. Dr. Koenig gives step-by-step instructions on how to handle numerous situations effectively. His book is better than the other available books on discipline!

– Curt Lorimar, Principal at South Asheboro Middle School

Smart Discipline works! The book is easy to read and offers a wide variety of concrete suggestions to allow for differences in teaching and learning styles. It’s a must for teachers and administrators.

– Jimmy Berry, Principal at Northwestern University Lab School

Dr. Koenig’s step-by-step interventions get immediate results. Our teachers consistently report actual changes in respect and cooperation with even highly difficult students.

– Don Pennington, Superintendent of Texas Schools

I just wanted to take a moment to tell you what a pleasure it was to welcome you to Youngstown. We thoroughly enjoyed the seminar and know the parents here learned a lot. Thanks so much for creating a dynamic workshop. You and your staff made things very easy for us.

– Amy Leigh Wilson, Mahoning Valley Parent Magazin

On behalf of the Children’s Miracle Network of Northern New York at Samaritan, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your outstanding presentation of the Smart Discipline Program for Parents, with a remarkable audience of 340.

We are still receiving rave reviews about your presentation. People stop me on the street and say “he was great…I didn’t feel the two hours go by he was so entertaining…I didn’t want him to stop for the break… I really enjoyed it… I wish my friend had been there…when are you doing it again?” The program struck a chord with Northern New Yorkers and we are looking forward to an encore presentation next year.

It was such a pleasure meeting with you and it is my hopes that this is the beginning of a long-standing tradition with Smart Discipline Seminars to benefit Children’s Miracle Network. Thanks again for providing us of this worthy and much needed fundraising opportunity. The event helped educate parents as well as improve the health and well-being of North Country children.

– Jocelyn D. Mejias, Children’s Miracle Network Coordinator, Watertown, NY

I want to express appreciation and gratitude for you and your organization; Smart Discipline. The entire experience for our church has been extraordinary. I feel blessed to have had this experience. From the moment I received your initial offer until the end of the program Tuesday evening, it has been a valuable experience.

You will recall that our event was a joint sponsorship with two other non-profits; The Kettle Moraine YMCA and the Washington County Family Center working with Our Savior’s Church. Close to 400 parents and grandparents are now smarter and better parents because of Smart Discipline!

– Oscar Kraft, Senior Pastor at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, West Bend, WI

Thank you so much for your wonderful presentation on Smart Discipline. The participants left with tools to implement behavior change in their children. The children of greater Nashua do not know what hit them! I can say that things in the Guthrie household are definitely better, as in many of my friends’ households as well!

I thought you would appreciate feedback on your program so I am enclosing a copy of the evaluation summary. As you can tell, it was very well received! Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.

– Amy Guthrie, RN, MS Manager, Community Health Education, St. Joseph Hospital, Nashua, NH

We’d like to take this opportunity to offer a genuine “Thank You” for your Smart Discipline presentation at Holy Spirit. You are currently “the buzz” here, with everyone having thoroughly enjoyed your seminar. We look forward to meeting with you again soon.

– Fr. James Podlesny, OSB, The Church of the Holy Spirit, Palmyra, PA

Our parish and all participants were truly blessed by your presence last evening. Your presentation was fun, informative, easy to follow, filled with practical ideas and examples we could relate to as parents. These were just a few remarks made by participants and I echo them.

Thank you! We will keep you and your family and your work in our prayers. We hope to see you again someday.

– Barb McCarthy

St. Andrew’s parents are still talking about the seminar last Thursday! Thank you so much for coming and for your devotion to helping children and parents. I think it is one of the most important things as adults we can do, to help the young have a deep and happy life.

– Sister Caroline Smith, SSMN, Ph.D.

Thank you again for coming to St. Elizabeth Seton, Crofton. The Smart Discipline Workshop was a fantastic experience for all who attended. I am still hearing wonderful remarks about the evening session that we had with the parents. Not only did your seminar help us in the development of discipline for children but also has helped us spiritually in our families.

Your presence at St. Elizabeth Seton touched many minds as well as hearts. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and we look forward to your return in the near future to Crofton. You are always welcome here.

– Sister Helen C. Milano, S.S.F. DRE, St. Elizabeth Seton, Crofton, Maryland

I am writing to tell you what a wonderful audio program Leading Children to Christ is. When you presented Smart Discipline at our church I was certainly able to see how faith had influenced your professional life. It move me deeply to hear the ways we can lead the younger generation down a similar path.

I would highly recommend this program for any parent or church leader. Not only does it provide very practical ways we can lead children to Christ, but it is inspiring as well. After listening to it you are motivated even more so to provide a healthy influence for children.

Thank you for providing this resource to Christian parents everywhere.
